Hand Painted Victorian Mintons Crane Cake Plate/Stand (2)




This stunning cake stand has been identified as Mintons, though is unstamped, and dates to circa the 1850s. There are two stands available in the same pattern, as well as a set of six cake plates. This is an early design, which was replicated about 10 years later by Collingwood (see other stands). The plate is elaborately hand painted with the image of a crane in an aqua pond, surrounded by tropical plants and flowers. The crane itself is painted in 3D relief. The quality of the artwork is superb, and the porcelain is also of the highest quality. There is significan crazing with some staining to the plate itself, as well as a chip to the rim (about 8 o'clock on the photograph). The base stand is a white porcelain, with mint border to the foot. There is also gilt detailing to the foot and column.
